This is an important and thought-provoking book of relevance to all those interested in participation and, in the more recent terminology, inclusion. The basic premise is that children and young people have much to offer the community they live in. However, participation does not mean token involvement but how to incorporate their specific needs and views into decision-making processes within the context of what is possible institutionally and culturally. The book provides many fascinating examples of how children can be facilitated to express their opinions and describe their reality without adult domination. Whilst the case studies will provide good ideas for teachers and others to adopt and adapt, this is not the main purpose of the book. There is a good readable, theoretical framework, conclusions to each part, a section on The Way Forward, and a useful bibliography and reference list.
