Indian Ocean Tsunami - Five Years On
On 26 December 2004 an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia triggered a massive tsunami that spread throughout the Indian Ocean, leaving hundreds of thousands dead or missing, and countless people homeless.
On returning to school after their Christmas holidays that year, students in the UK would have had lots of questions and concerns about the causes and impacts of the tsunami, and what they could do to help. And in the months that followed, many UK schools were involved in fundraising to help people affected by the disaster.
We thought teachers and students might want to use this five year anniversary to reflect on the impact of the tsunami and find out how people have managed to rebuild their lives. We have therefore drawn together here some relevant websites and teaching resources. These give some idea of the scale of the recovery from what was probably the biggest natural disaster in living memory.
Surviving the Tsunami
This website from the Thomson Reuters Foundation and International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies has video clips of survivors, and an animated map telling the story of the waves and the damage they caused.
