Who Do We Think We Are? Week

Who Do We Think We Are? Week explores identity, diversity and citizenship across the curriculum and runs from 22 to 28 June 2009.

Five international youth summit partipants explore the question 'Who Do We Think We Are?' during a workshop at the Royal Geographical Society The Who Do We Think We Are? project builds on the recommendations of Sir Keith Ajegbo's 2007 Curriculum Review on Diversity and Citizenship and aims to engage all schools in the exploration of identity, diversity and citizenship with their pupils - in their schools, and at local and national levels. It culminates in an annual week of activities, held in 2009 from 22 to 28 June.

During the 2008 pilot year of the project some 500 schools took part in activities. It is hoped that many more schools will become involved in 2009 and in future years.

Teachers wishing to participate in the project can find support and guidance through the project’s accompanying website www.wdwtwa.org.uk. The site has learning resources, exemplar case studies, toolkits and guides, all designed to help you engage students in exploring their identity and celebrating the connections that link them with other people and places.

Four year 8 pupils from Holland Park School answer the question 'Who Do We Think We Are?' at a workshop at the Royal Geographical Society The project provides subject specific support for Citizenship, Geography, History and RE lessons and can help every school better understand their local and national community. The project focuses on the following four key themes:

  • School and community
  • Relationships, belonging and faith
  • History and settlement
  • Britishness, national identity/values and the 2012 Games

Schools can engage in the project in a range of ways, and many ideas for creative projects are provided on the project website including:

  • Ideas for keynote assemblies
  • Ideas on engaging members of the local community in the life of the school through creative projects
  • Ideas for displays including identity collages, school identity quilts and diversity book displays.
