About the event

Held on the last day of the year New Years Eve is a celebration held worldwide to herald in the new year. It's a time to gather with friends and family, to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the new one.

How to approach it

The new year is a useful marker to reflect on our lives, all that we have achieved and what we want to do in the new year. Setting intentions and goals is an important skill for students to learn. You could use this day as an important lesson in being reflective on how we have acted and how we would like to act in the future.

You don’t have to necessarily focus on new year’s resolutions as such. Instead, use the new year as an example that we can follow the whole year. Ask: why is it important for us to set intentions? Good answers here are that setting goals helps us to structure our days and our time. It helps us live well thought out lives. It helps us adapt to challenges and setbacks at the same time as looking back on all that we have achieved.

The key to this reflection is being kind to ourselves and avoiding harsh self-criticism. Show your students that finding time to reflect on ourselves gives a bit of thought and structure that help us to live flourishing lives.
