DEA logoDEA is an education charity that promotes global learning

Our national network of member organisations and supporters share our conviction that the role of education today is crucial in shaping a better tomorrow.

For learners and society to flourish in a world which faces issues such as global poverty, climate change and racial and religious tensions, DEA believes that education should put learning in a global context, fostering:

  • critical and creative thinking
  • self-awareness and open-mindedness towards difference
  • understanding of global issues and power relationships, and
  • optimism and action for a better world.

We work to change both what people learn and how they learn, through influencing policy and improving educators' practice.

DEA is a registered charity, number 291696, and a company limited by guarantee, number 1737830.

DFID logoDFID, the Department for International Development, is leading the UK government's fight against world poverty.

One in five people in the world today, over 1 billion people, live in poverty on less than one dollar a day. In an increasingly interdependent world, many problems - like conflict, crime, pollution and diseases such as HIV and AIDS - are caused or made worse by poverty. DFID responds to emergencies, both natural and man-made. It also supports long-term programmes which aim to reduce poverty and disease and to increase the number of children in school, in support of the internationally agreed UN 'Millennium Development Goals'.

The 1997 White Paper sets out the Government's commitment to raise the UK public's understanding of our global mutual dependence and the need for international development. Specifically, the White Paper calls for every child to be educated about development issues, so that they can understand the key global considerations, which will shape their lives. Working with the Formal Education sector is the top priority for DFID's Development Awareness work.
