Help with searching on this website
This page explains how to use the different browse and search facilities to find teaching resources on the Global Dimension Website.
You can browse through the teaching resources database from any page of the site by choosing the curriculum subject, type of background material or topic from the left hand side of the screen.
You can do a more focused search by using the the drop-down menus in the Search Resources box on the right hand side of the screen. Or you can make a more detailed search by using the Advanced Resource Search page. You can use one or several criteria in any combination. You do not need to choose from all of the options; for example you might search using age range and theme only.
Once you have completed a search, the results will appear. Results are ordered with the resources published this year appearing first, in alphabetical order, followed by resources from previous years, in alphabetical order. To read a full description of any of the resources that appear in the search results, you can click on the title, the image, or the Read more... link.
1. Basic Search
Search criteria on every page of the website are as follows:
Curriculum subject
Choose the subject you are teaching. The subject list is not a comprehensive list of all subjects taught in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, but includes only those subjects where resources are available.
Subjects that have different names in different UK curricula, have been grouped together, such as Religious Education and Religious Studies are listed as 'RE / RS' and Information Communications Technology, Information Studies and Information Technology are listed as 'ICT / IS / IT'.
Resources for the subject English have been separated into 'English', which includes resources with activity and lesson plans suitable for English teaching and 'English: literature/story' which includes poetry, fiction and non-fiction without any accompanying activities. Similarly there are two categories for Geography teaching: 'Geography' and 'Geography: maps/atlases'.
Background material
These resources are suitable for teachers of all subjects and have been categorised as follows:
-
Assemblies - resources suitable for presenting assemblies
-
Audits - resources to support any auditing or measurement of global dimension activity in school
-
Awards - ways of recognising schools' work in global dimension related activities
-
Background information - resources providing general background, usually on a particular topic
-
Management issues - resources for school leaders and managers
-
Professional development - resources suitable for initial teacher training and continuing professional development
-
Whole School - resources that deal with school ethos, environment and whole-school approaches
Topic
Choose a global dimension topic. The topics cover a range of global and development issues, some that are related to specific curriculum subjects, and some that are broader.
Age range
Choose the age range of the pupils you are teaching. There is a choice of six age ranges: 3-5, 5-7, 7-11, 11-14, 14-16 and 16+. In the full description of the resource, you can see the key stage or Scottish level that the resource is suitable for underneath the age range.
Some resources are labelled in key stages which correspond to the curriculum in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. However, many will be of use to teachers in Scotland. Key stage 1 is equivalent to P1-P3, Key Stage 2 is equivalent to P3-P7, Key Stage 3 is equivalent to P7-S3 and Key Stage 4 is equivalent to S3-S5.
Price
Choose from one of four categories: Free, under £5, £5 to £10 and over £10. Free resources tend to include websites and leaflets, whereas priced resources include teaching packs and interactive resources. Free resources are not included in the under £5 category. Resources that include several items may appear under more than one price range.
Keyword/title
You can search for resources using a particular phrase, and if you can't find a topic in the drop down list, you can use the keyword search instead. You can also use the keyword search if you know the title of the resource you are looking for.
2. Advanced Resource Search
If your search returns too many results, you may want to use the Advanced Resource Search, which includes the following additional criteria:

3. No Results
If you search for resources, and there are no results displayed, you may be able to find more by searching with fewer criteria. If you still can't find anything, let us know what you are looking for and we may be able to help or direct you to someone who can. Email: info@globaldimension.org.uk.
4. Resource Icons
To help you find the resource you are looking for, we have developed a set of icons to explain each resource on the database. Some icons relate to the format of the resource (CD, poster, website etc), some relate to which age group the resource is suitable for (3-5 year olds, 5-7 year olds etc), and some relate to the price of the resource.
Each resource will show any icons that are relevant to that resource. The following list shows what each means:
